This fall, I’m thrilled to be teaching an eight-week course with Path With Art called Humor in Art. It’s an online journey that invites artists of all kinds — painters, writers, performers, and makers — to explore how laughter, absurdity, and play can open new doors to creativity and connection.

Humor, to me, is a creative force. It can flip perspectives, soften our defenses, and help us see the world — and ourselves — from new angles. In class, we experiment with surprise, parody, and everyday absurdity to discover how humor helps us process experience and build resilience. We learn to embrace mistakes, to find beauty in the ridiculous, and to turn the things that once felt awkward or “wrong” into sparks of imagination.

Working with Path With Art’s community is always inspiring. Many participants bring profound stories of transformation and recovery, and laughter becomes a bridge — a way of sharing humanity without needing the perfect words. Over our eight weeks together, we create space for joy, curiosity, and wonderfully weird art that reminds us how healing it can be simply to play.

No experience is necessary — just a willingness to show up, take creative risks, and maybe laugh at yourself along the way. Because sometimes, the most meaningful art begins with a smile.
